Our amazing San Guides

Be ushered into the heart of Bushman culture by one of our qualified San Tour Guides. Our guides come from a diverse range of San communities, each with their own language and story.  Whoever accompanies you, you will discover some of the qualities that enabled San to survive, and thrive, for centuries.

Whether your tour takes you along our medicinal and food trails, further afield into the Nature Reserve or indoors through the intimate spaces of the museum, you will be guided into a new understanding of the indomitable San spirit.  You will be astounded.

San Guided Tours

Each of our superb San Guided Tours is different, but all are designed to engage the body and senses, as much as the mind.

They demonstrate the skills and knowledge of the San, whose simple sophistication may surprise you.

Garden Tour

This walking tour includes a memorable tea ceremony, learning something of the special healing qualities of indigenous plants, of San click punctuated languages, and the lost art of story-telling.

Cost: R160

Duration: 45 minutes

San guided experience

A compelling insight into the traditional lifestyle of San culture, heritage and ancient survival skills.

Accompany your San guide on an open vehicle, through unspoilt fynbos to a replica village.  Discover how to 'read' the landscape, the flora and the fauna, and return home, perhaps changed, by the encounter.

Cost: R285

Duration: 90 minutes

Heritage Centre Tour

The Heritage Centre Tour is about so much more than looking at a collection of artefacts and historical photos.

Your San guide will contextualise key exhibitions and stories in the museum, demonstrating the skills and knowledge of San, while telling the archaeological story of origins.

Self guided museum tours

We know not everyone likes to 'join a tour'.  There is such a richness and depth of content in our three museum buildings that you could spend many hours engaging with our exhibitions.  We invite you to do this at your leisure.

There is no need to book in advance. Simply buy your entrance ticket and collect your self guide map at Reception.

The independent visitor - hikers, bikers, outdoor types

If travelling solo is more to your taste, we have walking and mountain bike trails to suit all tastes and levels, from hard core to easy riding.

There is a small cost to use our trails. You must become a Friend of !Khwa ttu. Sign up is simple and done at Reception.

If cycling you will need to BYOB 'Bring you own bike'.

Mountain bike trails

For the adventure cyclist we have a purpose-built 10km single-track course. There are a number of route choices, with distinguished twists, zigzags and many berms to be navigated - this is a track you will want to ride again and again.

Or you may be a rider who prefers a more gentle route along jeep tracks and gravel roads.

In any event you may well find yourself alongside herds of game, stopping for thrilling views and even taking a rest stop to explore our replica traditional San village.

Trail runners and hikers

We play nicely, so hard core trail runners and cyclists use the same trails (though rarely meet).

Whether you want to work up a sweat on a training run, or go for a gentle hike in nature, you should keep your eyes open - the chances are good that you will see zebra, eland, springbok, ostrich or a bat-eared fox on your route.
