||Kabbo Academy Aspects

Purpose and Content

Training empowers the San to avoid exploitation and participate in the tourism and hospitality industry on their own terms. The !Khwa ttu San Culture & Education Centre in South Africa strives to build pride in San culture and appropriately share San culture, and to create hope for the future.

Our ||Kabbo Academy based at !Khwa ttu develops skills to prepare the San for employment and for the means to help support their families.  Young San women and men from all over southern Africa come to learn more about their history, culture and traditional knowledge. It is here where the San are equipped to teach their own communities or the broad public. The training programme is, ultimately, relevant to San lives and livelihoods.

Through our custom made 7 month San Community-Based Tourism Training Programme unemployed young San from South Africa, Namibia and Botswana learn how to be nature and culture guides, how to wait tables and attend a bar. The main component of the comprehensive curriculum is a Nature and Cultural Site Guide Skills Programme (aligned to CATHSSETA - Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality, Sports Sector Education and Training Authority). The young San also get practice in the workplace and get a better idea of what they are good at and what they want to do when they leave.  The programme endeavours to instill skills that enable San to enter the workplace, or that they can take back and use to help uplift their communities.
