Baba Rosie Vilander, the young ǂKhomani waitress, whose friendliness has been praised by numerous patrons of the !Khwa ttu restaurant, participated recently in a three-day intensive training workshop. The training focussed on food and beverage service skills and was held for 27 participants at the restaurant of Evita se Perron in the small town of Darling.
The training was conducted by a member of the South African School for Professional Service Training. According to Baba Rosie the workshop's main components included "how to set a table, how to receive clients and how to serve food and wine." Although Baba Rosie welcomed the opportunity to improve her service skills, she felt that the on-the-job training she had already received by the !Khwa ttu chef had laid a sound foundation for the success of her work. Therefore "the best thing [at the training workshop] was that we talked about self-development and how to work with people." Not only the discussions about self-control, self-esteem, motivation and perseverance but also the fact that Baba Rosie mastered all 80 questions of the workshop's exam justified her proud statement "I have more self-confidence now." Baba Rosie's advanced skills and her grown self-confidence have contributed to smoothly run services, particularly during the current festive season, when companies celebrate their end-of year functions at the !Khwa ttu restaurant.
