Since mid-October 2007, visitors to !Khwa ttu are being greeted at the recently built introduction office by charming Andre Lekoa., a !Xun youth, who has been living at !Khwa ttu for a number of years. Besides entering statistical data about the guests Andre hands out an information sheet, which provides an overview of what !Khwa ttu offers and can easily be read on the way to the parking lot.
"My favourite task here is to talk to people. Most people talk in English to me and I understand all their questions but sometimes when I reply I don't have all the English words I need. Then I tell them that I am still learning English," Andre describes part of his job.
In order to assist Andre in improving his communication skills the professional guides, the !Khwa ttu trainer and the ABET teacher have joined hands. On the weekends he accompanies the guides on their tours so that he internalises the array of information they provide about the San's history, present developments and future aspirations. During the weekly training sessions Andre improves his communication skills and the ABET classes contribute to the expansion of not only his general English vocabulary but also of specific tourism terms. Assignments keep Andre busy at times when no visitors approach his office.
Andre's appealing personality has prompted visitors to ask him if all San are as friendly as he is. He told them, "some of them are friendly, some of them are not so friendly because all of us are different." Andre's sociability, his pleasure in communicating with people and his desire to receive training in tourism-related areas make him the ideal San person to work at !Khwa ttu's new introduction office.
